Current viruses, which are through e-mail distribute contain its own mail server on which they are able to sender of the message to falsify. Because the real sender not to be identified, it is unfortunately not possible, a message to him. Would the virus filter accepting the virenverseuchten reject mail and the sending mail server about it, it would mail server that the message (usually along with them virus) to the alleged, fake return, so that our server to spread the virus would contribute. To neither innocent third parties inaccurate virus warnings to harass, or even virus threat to run distribute, the forwarding of messages with viruses, known to the sender falsify implicitly denied.

According to ZDNet, in a luncheon with the media strategist global security of the parent company Grisoft, Larry Bridwell, stated that:

We are in the process of seeing what are the benefits of this, especially since we have made the BSD version, which makes it a little easier to port to the Mac.

It’s in research and development to see if it will.

Bridwell, who admits using Linux and OS X at home, also stated:

If you are buying OS X to be absolutely sure you are in a dream world. There is no such thing (at least in the open market) as a secure operating system.

There are operating systems that can be sealed to make them more secure but while humans use them and while humans are susceptible to social engineering and make mistakes, these products will have vulnerabilities.

While OS X is quite safe and has remained relatively free of viruses and spyware, except for one another proof of concept, it is not magically immune to everything as many people tend to think. Just someone with enough time, knowledge and malicious intent to break that illusion, and that they are definitely good news. Hopefully indeed achieve launch.

Trends 2008: What malware us in the future

ESET, a leader in proactive detection and developer of multipremiado ESET NOD32 antivirus publishes a report on trends that are expected for 2008 in malicious code and anti-virus security.

As ESET ahead in 2007, malware is continuing its actions harmful to expand their foreheads attack and improving its effectiveness.

Thus, at present, the variety of types of malware, as well as the dimensions that comprise its effects, have increased highlighting certain issues that make this kind of programme, the most significant threats and harder to fight any computing environment.

Cristian Borghello, Technical & Educational ESET Manager for Latin America, prepared this report which explains the trends that are expected for 2008 of malicious code and the creators of malware.

Abuse of user confidence

The Social Engineering remains the most exploited and infect to fool the user. This is evidenced by the appearance of large numbers of malware that use virtual cards and large-scale events to prompt the user to download a malicious. The realization of the Olympic Games in 2008 will surely be a major network to hunt unsuspecting users.

The formation of large online communities (such as MySpace, Orkut, FaceBook and different online games) has also become an important point for abusing the trust of users. Currently, because there are plenty of malware available to steal private data to users who participate in these communities. As always, this year’s Asia has marked the path of what to expect soon to this side of the world.

It also applies the above to phishing attacks, which hooks became more sophisticated and become more effective. Old techniques, such as local pharming, remain heavily used and the major Latin American banks (and their users) are becoming the epicenter of these attacks, through mailings and Trojans.

An example of perfecting these techniques are cases where phishing attacks do not involve the cloning of websites to steal sensitive information from users but, contrary to this, use methodologies by which overlap in the area of access Home-Banking, an image similar to the real one.

On the other hand, construction kits phishing, although had boomed during the first months of the year 2007 and then were declining, it remains to be latent threats.

Abuse of Internet resources

Given this scenario, we are still witnessing the natural evolution of malware will continue to grow and will be further improved with techniques and methodologies of all types may reach worrisome levels. For example, in 2007 a number of countries had already denounced cyber attacks carried out by Trojans aimed at stealing secret documents.

With regard to junk e-mail and unsolicited-commonly known as spam-is seen a major breakthrough in the methodologies of deception used by creators of malware to grab the attention of users, for example mass messages containing pictures and birth of Spam in PDF files and MP3.

The theft of huge databases of various global organizations attacks aimed at allowing users through spam and phishing custom. Because of this, will become more common to find that spam is addressed to a person with a name, and even in the native language of the owner of the email accounts.

On the other hand, taking advantage of new technologies for communication of online communities mentioned above, the ordinary spam is being moved to these communities in format splog (comments on blogs linking to sites harmful).

The emergence of free services type mash-up, where a site is not vulnerable “receive” other services that may be vulnerable, is taking root and it is becoming increasingly normal to find links to sites known to contain third-party services aimed at malicious code. This even happens in any form and with any subject.

Vulnerabilities

A special section deserve mistakes that all software is as common denominator. The exploitation of vulnerabilities through browsers is one of the techniques that has been refined over during 2007 and every day there are new exploits and new scripts (usually ofuscados to evade the security tools) that exploit weaknesses in sites Web committed and which allow the installation of malware on computers.

The merger between different malicious code, the different techniques and the diversification of methodologies will be a constant during the 2008 to allow offenders a better chance of making some scam with user information, obtained through malware.

Must remarcarse that the current trend of the creators of malware is infecting a large number of users in a completely silent through codes hidden in Web sites to pass unnoticed. Undoubtedly, this technique is more efficient than a massive attack and faster than alerting users and security companies.

On the other hand, the creation of web servers with malicious content, as well as the liaison from the same sites known previously committed and gave birth to a “new” concept: Malware 2.0. This analogy makes clear reference to the Web 2.0, where every component has a harmful dynamic role that is also based on user behavior to a website.

New technologies

The use of new technologies continues to grow like their vulnerabilities and forms of exploitation. Here, technologies such as voice over IP were not the exception and also ended up being exploited by malware.

In addition, reference should be made to the creation of malicious software products for emerging as new versions of the iPod and iPhone. While infections have not been massive, it is sufficient to mark the way in this regard.

Moreover, the use of instant messaging clients and P2P networks to propagate malware are commonplace, and have even reached high infection levels in Latin America.

The spread and further infection through a removable storage devices (USB, memories, flash, etc.) that leverage the benefits of automatic execution of the operating systems, has been increasing since mid-2007 and it appears that will continue to grow even more.

The threats always empowered

Trojans, worms and PUP (Potential Unwanted Programs; or Spanish potentially unwanted programs) are becoming increasingly sophisticated to the point that incorporate defensive capabilities that make the task of analysis and removal more complicated. For example, many of them already have the ability to detect when they are executed or where virtual machines are being analyzed.
Author: Cristian Borghello, Technical & Educational Manager for Latin America ESET

With regard to worms and Trojans who have played a preponderant during 2007, it is hoped that more growth because they are the fundamental tool for the creation of botnets, as demonstrated by the spread of SDBot and Nuwar ( also known as worm Storm) whose sole purpose is to create networks with thousands of nodes of infected computers. The objectives of these networks, although it handle multiple scenarios, is still unknown.

Conclusions

Like ESET advanced on the findings for the year 2007, should grasp the great action that took and have organised networks for the crime in this whole picture: the interoperation of spammers, phishers, botmasters and creators of malware do that sometimes Internet becomes a place aggressive transforming mules users (those who move money and usually unknowingly misled previously).

In addition, a factor that remains intact and will remain so for much longer, regardless of the type of threat that concerned nor the different methodologies used, a key component that no malicious code or wasted no longer monopolize: Social Engineering.

But despite the use of this technique, users should be aware that they have a much more sophisticated tool: education, which applied in a timely manner, allowing enhance the chances of not becoming victims of malware in general or any threat that level computing is present.

If this education joined as tools of the latest generation solutions ESET, which match the evolution and innovation of malware, the user will achieve high levels of protection at all times.

The antivirus software increasingly are losing ground in their battle to provide reliable protection for computer systems, according to the latest issue of the German computer magazine “c’t”, which tested 17 antivirus software currently in use.

Each piece of software was tested for the recognition of more than one million different pests, including Trojan horses, viruses, worms and bots.

Two products were able to identify more than 99 percent of these malicious intruders, while four others found at least 95 percent, falling into the category of “very good” in the test.

Many of the programs tested showed a significant weakness to detect previously unknown pests, as “c’t”.

This requires heuristic methods, which involves scanning specific patterns in the program code. More worrying still, almost all programs on evidence obtained worst rating heuristics than a year ago.

In addition to the heuristic method, several programs work with a system called “behavioral blocking”, in which the anti-virus software must recognize the malicious software according to their behavior.

This also produced “disappointing results”, according to the German magazine.

The experts also criticized the programs for its lack of tools to detect “rootkits” codes used to disguise malicious programs.

If someone suspects that their system can be infected with a rootkit, the best remedy is the use of a rescue CD, which unfortunately is often not included in most of the antivirus software

Although the title suggests, this is not an article about the new gardening techniques but a thorough details on the applications and features that have antivirus traded in the local market, in order to keep your computer without invaders

Almost not a day goes by without seeing developments in the field of viruses that attack computer systems in the world. This week, for example, the protagonist was baptized Mydoon variant, which spreads through web links and not by attachments to mails.

Millions of Internet users are increasingly exposed to any information stored on the PC disappear at the time or less thought that some of the programs stop working as it should.

If you ever went through the clutches of a cybervirus, perhaps his team already has a service to detect it, but are you sure you are patched, how renewed its annual subscription?, Does not have money to pay for an antivirus system and does not know how to be protected? Well, then here are some tips and data to be reckoned with.

Options Free

On the Internet, there are several options for downloading anti-virus systems at no charge. Not often have services as complete systems by subscription but it is an initial barrier to avoid being infected.

One is the Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner to be low since many sites (eg www.programas-gratis.net/php/programa2.php?id_programa=2097; www.zonagratuita.com/a-utilidades/antigusanos/ Bazooka.htm; http://bazooka-adware-and-spyware-sca.uptodown.com/).

This program examines the entire system within a few seconds and looking not only the presence of viruses but also spyware or adware. They become infected with any of this program tells you how to remove them. The distributor is kephyr and also can be downloaded from its website (kephyr.com).

Avast! Home Edition is effective and protects electronic mail services and chat automatically and can be updated online. Have Spanish version and download from www.avast.com.

Another free product is free MailWasher that is designed to protect the attacks arriving via mail. In conducting its analysis warns about possible spam or virus you must decide whether you want to remove them before entering his team. It obtained by visiting its distributor www.firetrust.com.

A program is simple and effective SpyBot Search and Destroy. It is perhaps the most comprehensive of freeware and protects us from spyware, adwares and any trash that aims to steal our information.

The system is a tool that enables remove in one step. The update can be programmed automatically. To download connect from http:/spybot.safer-networking.de./es

If you have patience through a search engine can find many more sites in Spanish to download these and other free programs. Investigate and be sure to be protected, the options are many and are at your fingertips with a single click.

The payment systems

Among the many good programs that are available in the market are going to talk about three of them for their expertise and global presence are recognized for their effectiveness and continues to upgrade.

One of the most añejas in the market is Norton Antivirus, which since 1982 is working to eliminate these evil creations.

The company developed the Symantec Norton Antivirus 2004 which protects the computer while surfing the Internet at the same time you get information from floppy disks, CD `so a network checks and attachments that are received by e-mail.

AntiVirus costs $ 199 (service for a year), Norton System Works offers other tools besides antivirus costs U S $ 70 and Internet Security U S $ 70. On its website there is a free version to test for 15 days. Look at www.symantec.com It’s simple to use, is kept updated automatically and also protects against spyware.

Another company that makes anti-virus product quality is very good with the McAfee VirusScan anti-virus one of the most popular for its ease of use and effectiveness.

The program allows the addition of a filter firewalls and Spam. The protection is automatic and is launched every time you enter data into the computer from the Internet or from a CD or diskette.

The price of the product is in about 150 pesos and available in Spanish. Like the previous version also has a demo to try it on your computer for 15 days and low from the site www.networkassociates.com / us / downloads / evals / default.asp

The last mention is that the Panda Titanium Antivirus 2005 that is now available and has a cost of Use, 6 months, U S $ 30; for a year of U S $ 50 and two U S $ 85. The home version of the product can be tested free for 30 days since www.pandasoftware.es

It is very practical and easy to use, even for those with little management of the computer and that are very colourful icons that help you avoid mistakes. The system is protected both the incoming and outgoing data (which also makes Norton Antivirus) and is updated daily.

It is very common to ask “what is the best software?” Or “What
Antivirus choose? “.

By themselves these two questions are very difficult to answer, but we must know that there are three antivirus certifications that can help us in this task: ICSA Labs. (*), Checkmark (**) and Virus Bulletin (***).

Generally, when you buy an anti-virus solution is the problem with the
Resources necessary to thoroughly assess the technical capabilities of
The same.

The certifications provide us with a proven methodology to determine whether
Antivirus product, we chose to protect our computer or
Our computer network has the necessary characteristics to
Deal with the threats of computing in the real world.

ICSA Labs

One of the most effective certification is provided ICSA Labs. These laboratories, the company TruSecure, provide a certification service pay, and annual repeatable until approval is based on the ability of products for viruses In-the-Wild viruses (****, assets) and a collection Sample own ICSA.

The methodology is based ICSA specifically in the detection of viruses that are capable of reproducing, before they can infect the system. They are also further evidence of an optional basis, which is based on the possibility of disinfecting systems affected by the virus have in their collection.

To participate in this certification process, companies must send their products to ICSA Labs. Classified in any of the existing categories and depending on the category, the evaluation criteria will vary. To obtain the certification of ICSA Labs., The software must successfully complete the tests imposed by the laboratory as viruses on demand, failure to report false form of administration.

What gives this certification is the assurance that, at least at the time of assessment, antivirus certificate complies with the guidelines set out by ICSA Labs. Since the process requires roundtrip in many cases the company sends the product for evaluation, but fulfilled in the first instance, you can correct it, and resubmit it to obtain certification.

ICSA Labs. Is one of the oldest in laboratories certified security software and the fact that an antivirus product has such certification is important, but limited.

CheckMark

Checkmark is certification from West Coast Labs., Which is an independent organization with over 10 years of experience. Conducts assessments of security products, separated into two categories: Content Security and Security Perimeter. The first category is the one that includes specific certifications for antivirus products to which divided into Anti-Virus Level 1, Anti-Virus, Trojans and Spyware.

Certification Anti-Virus Level 1 is given to those products that are capable of detecting all viruses In-the-Wild without generating false positives.

For Level 2 certification should possess certification Level 1 and disinfect a computer infected, no errors after eliminating the virus.

The certification Trojans (Trojan Checkmark) is based on testing the product against all Trojans that West Coast Labs. Have a whole evaluation, without causing false positive.

Finally, certification Spyware, the latest of all, is similar to the Trojans, only that the product must be able to detect all spyware, cookies and keyloggers in the test suite, in addition to not generate false positives. (Eset NOD32 was the second anti-virus certification).

These certifications have a cost for companies wishing to participate in a predefined validity. To keep the certification, the company should re-evaluate antivirus products before the end of the validity.

The methodology of West Coast Labs. In these certifications enables a product to be re-evaluated multiple times to obtain certification, if it produces flaws in the earlier stages. The reevaluation is carried out after a period of six weeks after the test in which it has failed.

While the evaluations that West Coast Labs. Enable antivirus products be improved to reach standards of excellence, not really show that a product is capable of coping against malware in a real environment. This is because in a normal situation, the product installed on a user’s computer does not have a second chance to provide protection; but detects the first, the team becomes infected.

Virus Bulletin

Virus Bulletin began in 1989 as an independent specialist journal on computer viruses and since 1991 began to pursue the acknowledged VB Conference, where the vast majority of antivirus companies come together every year.

Since the mid-90 is delivering prizes VB 100%, one of the most respected anti-virus certifications 3 of the present. The awards VB 100% are now one of the most coveted among antivirus companies because they provide a methodology different from the other two certifications that we commented earlier.

The methodology of the awards VB 100% examines the two most common types of exploration: on demand or access (monitor resident). In both cases is assessed to be able to detect 100% of the viruses In-the-Wild, correctly reported detections and not make false positives.

The list of viruses In-the-Wild used is the latest available prior to the closing date for receipt of products involved. If the virus detected 100% of these viruses, but commits false positives (ie, a file erroneously detects common and harmless), it does not receive the award.

Products are evaluated in test equipment that have applications that normally would have a common user to replicate the most consistently real.

In this certitificación the antivirus product has only one chance to get the VB 100%. If it fails the evaluation, did not receive the award and must be presented at another time. Moreover, the flaws are published by Virus Bulletin, which really shows the status of each assessment, knowing which products were involved, which approved and which do not.

Why is it important for testing once and known failures? Because knowing the recipients of the awards VB 100% really know what antivirus products are ready for viruses in the real world, which does not tolerate failures or give second chances.

Last but not least, participation in the VB 100% award is free for antivirus companies. This provides a sense of transparency to users and ensures the independence of the evaluation as the antivirus companies are not customers regarding evidence, which allows a look completely impartial.

Virus Bulletin also evaluates the detection against a collection of viruses old zoo, and the scanning speed of the product, providing a measure of performance of the same. Thus, compared with other certifications, awards VB 100% so that more resemble what would happen in the real world, in terms of viruses, which are highly respected by the industry.

Annually, Virus Bulletin place between 4 and 5 tests for the awards ceremony, each on different platforms, such as Linux, Windows and Novell, in an attempt to provide the fullest possible gaze. This makes them an award for continuity and consistency. There is no point in receiving a VB 100% each so long as the issue is properly respond to viruses in the real world at all times.

The results of the awards can be found on the page Virus Bulletin (free after registration), and it is interesting to note as those who have won more awards, it is not the name that most have… invite you to guess which is the only virus has not lost a single Virus In-the-Wild in the last 7 years and has won the greatest number of awards VB 100% in that period of time.
